The Power of Slowing Down

Not every career move should happen quickly.

Some of the most important decisions you will make need time.

Time to think. Time to explore. Time to question what you actually want. Time to understand your options before you choose one.

And yet, I see most of my clients trying to rush through career transitions as if speed itself were a sign of progress.

We Have Started Confusing Speed With Progress

We live in a culture that rewards being busy.

Answer quickly. Decide quickly. Move quickly. Learn something new. Get the next certification. Apply for the next role.

Sometimes, doing more feels much easier than stopping to ask whether we are actually moving in the right direction.

But career decisions are rarely that simple.

If you are considering a career change, a relocation, a move into a more senior role, or even a completely different professional direction, you need more than motivation.

You need space. Space to understand what you want. Space to explore your options. Gather information.

And, perhaps most importantly, space to think.

Some Decisions Need Time

When someone tells me, “I need to figure this out quickly,” my first question is usually:

Why?

Because changing careers is not something you can always solve by moving faster.

Neither is relocating. Neither is deciding whether you're ready for a more senior role.

And neither is figuring out what you actually want from your career.

Sometimes, moving faster simply means making a decision before you have enough information.

  • You choose the first opportunity because you are tired of searching.

  • You accept a role because it sounds like the obvious next step.

  • You move countries because the job looks attractive on paper.

  • You pursue another qualification because you feel you should be doing something.

And then, a few months later, you realise you never really stopped to ask whether it was the right move for you.

Slowing Down Creates Better Questions

One of the things I notice in my coaching work is that people often come to me wanting an answer.

  1. “What should I do next?”

  2. “Which role should I target?”

  3. “Should I stay or leave?”

  4. “Should I relocate ?”

  5. “I am ready for the next level, but shall I change industries to achieve that?”

Stop assuming, gather information, explore the market, network with people, get on interviews, hire a career coach or do it yourself, but please make sure you explored all the options available.

That kind of thinking takes time. And that time is not wasted. It is part of the decision.

Growth Needs Space Too

We often talk about professional growth as if it is always about adding something.

Another skill, certification, responsibility, achievement.

But improvement also requires reflection. You need time to understand what is working.

What you have outgrown. What you need to strengthen.

Sometimes the most valuable work you can do is pause long enough to understand what needs to change.

Slowing Down Does Not Mean Standing Still

This is probably the distinction I want people to remember.

Slowing down is not the opposite of ambition.

You can be highly ambitious and still take your time with important decisions.

You can want more responsibility and still spend months preparing yourself for the right opportunity.

You can want to change careers and still explore several directions before choosing one.

You can want to relocate and still research the country, the market, the opportunities and the life you would actually be building there.

The goal is to be more intentional about what deserves your time, attention and energy.

Because sometimes the fastest way forward is to stop rushing.

My Personal Belief

The older I get, the more I appreciate the value of taking my time with decisions that matter.

Not because I have become less ambitious. Quite the opposite.

I know that the decisions that shape a career deserve more than urgency. They deserve curiosity. Reflection. Exploration. And enough space to see the bigger picture.

If you are at a point where your career is changing, and you're trying to understand what the next chapter should look like, you don't have to figure it all out alone.
